MERDEKA! MERDEKA! MERDEKA!
Today is Malaysia’s National Day. The 49th year of its Independance. I’ve never realised how young my home country is.
Malaysia is not perfect, it has its ugly side - which likes to rear its head quite frequently. I used to shun Malaysia when I was younger and living in New Zealand. But now that I’m older and wiser (just abit more), I realise what is important about this country of mine.
My family has been here for a few generations. And this is where they live. It is also where I grew up and learned many lessons. I have many fond memories; and many bad ones. No matter where I may be in the world, Malaysia will always be my home; and I will always consider myself a Malaysian.
I love my country for the beauty that it has in its land and its people. I love my country because of the endless potential that it has to be greater than it is. There may be evil and questionable-doings in this land; but all the more so that we have to question and fight for what is right and just. All in the name of love for my country.
Happy Merdeka everyone! =)

Hey Ron =)
I can’t say that I’m proud of Malaysian politics, but like you say, age lends you a different perspective. Ultimately, it feels like most of us return not really to ‘Malaysia’, but to ‘family’.
And you’re right about Malaysia’s potential - being relatively young, there is room for so much growth and improvement, and it can be very satisfying knowing that you lent a hand in the process. Because if you’re not going to do it, who will?
(Still, I can’t say that I’m really keen on returning to Malaysia to settle down just yet. ^^)
