Useful Japanese Phrases

A colleague of mine used to work in Japan probably about a decade ago.

He was kind enough to lend me his old and torn mini Japanese phrase book to help me when I get there.

Its a really interesting and user-friendly book. Its called ‘Berlitz: Japanese for travelers’. The original was printed in 1974, but the one I have is a new edition printed in 1987.

Here’s some useful Japanese phrases that might be helpful to me:

“O-tearai wa doko desu ka” - Where is the toilets?

“Shibobun no oi ryori wa sakanakeraba narimasen” - I must avoid fatty dishes.

“Konban watashi to issho ni dekakemasen ka?” - Would you like to go out tonite?

“O-taku made o-okuri shimasho ka?” - May I take you home?

“Geri shiteimasu” - I’ve got diarrhoea.

Or here’s my favourite:

“Chitsuen ni kakatte imasu” - I have a vaginal infection.

I pity the tourist that will actually have to look through this book to find that phrase to use it. But she will probably be thanking her lucky stars that it actually IS covered in the book!
